Original Press Release:

Billions Australia presents Antony and the Johnsons

Last January, when Antony walked on to the stage of the Sydney Opera House on the first night of Came So Far For Beauty, an all-star tribute to the songs of Leonard Cohen, he was virtually unknown in Australia. The Age's Guy Blackman recounts, “ Antony opened his mouth and the auditorium fell completely silent. For the next five minutes, every person in the room sat entranced as a beautiful song was performed by a singer with a voice just about as pure, rich and emotional as Nina Simone's. When the song ended, Antony received a level of rapturous applause that none of the evening's better-known performers could come close to matching .”

Shortly thereafter, Antony and his band The Johnsons issued the extraordinary and sublime album, I Am A Bird Now. Hailed globally as a masterwork of transcendental emotion and featuring guest appearances from luminaries Lou Reed, Boy George, Rufus Wainwright and Devendra Banhart, the release garnered the UK's prestigious Mercury Music Prize in September. The year has been full of stunning sold-out performances across Europe and North America, culminating last month with a spectacular headline concert at New York's revered Carnegie Hall with the legendary Jimmy Scott as an honored special guest.

Some musicians hide behind personas, or the words of others, or fine-tuned video imagery. Antony, as otherworldly as he may look and sound, is not afraid of letting audiences see his true self, however vulnerable. "Opening myself up to the work, and to the world, is my passion," he attests. "That is the great risk and the great boon of doing this. There is that rare experience the performer gets to enjoy, which, in a way, is like having your spirit witnessed by people and, sometimes, appreciated. Perhaps people will see it and relate or identify themselves in it."

Antony and The Johnsons return to Australia for a short series of unforgettable theatrical performances in January 2006.

More than 3000 tickets have already been sold for their exclusive Sydney dates at the magnificent State Theatre as part of the Sydney Festival and now we are pleased to announce that Antony has confirmed additional shows in MELBOURNE and BRISBANE.

These two special shows go on sale Friday 25th November 2006.
I t'll be one of the most moving experiences you'll have all year.
